Welcome "Living Social" Students! Here are some quick facts:
1. We are the largest ballroom dance studio in the USA, offering many choices 7 days a week in group classes and private lessons.
2. We are located next to the Public Transit Center at 8900 SW Commercial Street, Tigard OR (easily accessible from 217, 99W or I-5).
3. Living Social coupons are valid for all our beginner swing classes. Each are taught in a 5-week group series. We have many time slots and styles to choose from! A complete list of upcoming beginner swing classes is featured below, as well as a description of various swing dance styles. If you're not sure which style works best for you, feel free to call us at (503)639-4861!
4. Most people come to our classes as individuals. You do not need a partner.
5. We recommend comfortable, leather-soled dress shoes or boots, and comfortable clothing. For your comfort and safety, avoid open-toed shoes, sling-backs, or rubber-soled tennis shoes. You do not need to invest in specialized dance shoes for beginners classes.

About the different Swing Styles:
West Coast Swing
West Coast Swing is popular on the West Coast of the United States, as it's name implies. During our last 20 trips to New York City, where we receive our coaching, we have seen West Coast Swing growing in popularity there. West Coast Swing is a "slot dance" in which the partnership and figures revolve almost magnetically over a one-dimensional line on the floor. This "dancing in a slot" approach derives from San Diego dancehalls as far back as 1938. 50's rhythm and blues music is readily-identifiable West Coast Swing music. West Coast Swing is extremely different from Single Swing, Lindy, and other 'big-band'-type swing styles. We host West Coast Swing Dances every Sunday night at The Ballroom Dance Company, as well as the 3rd Friday of every month. West Coast Swing can be danced to a wide variety of music speeds and genres including but not limited to hip hop and country western.
Single Time Swing
Single Swing is easy to learn and very popular in Portland. Instead of dancing triple-steps as you would in American Rhythm Swing, you take a single step to each side, making the basic timing step, step, rock step. This simpler basic allows you to dance to very fast music, like you hear at parties or in clubs. "Swing" encompasses more than 10 different dances that vary in tempo, character, and music. An example of Single Swing music is "Jump Jive'n Wail" by Louis Prima.
Lindy Hop Swing
Lindy Hop Swing Swing is a fun and athletic form of swing dance popular with young dancers in the Portland area. It's best to dance with fast big band music like "Zoot Suit Riot" by the Cherry Poppin' Daddies. Lindy Hop has been featured in popular media like Christina Aguilera's "Candyman" video.
"Living Social" Review
1. The Living Social promotion is designed to bring new students to our dance studio, so it is not available for our current students.
2. Only one coupon per person, please. People may purchase a 2nd coupon for their 'guest' if they wish to bring a friend or spouse to class.
3. The coupons are only valid for any of our beginning level "swing" 5-week group series.
